Everywhere you look there is a celebrity on a magazine cover or a friend showing off her baby bump. And the photographer was just perfect. And when your friend casually mentions the price, you gulp, stare at your own baby bump and wonder if the poor kid will ever be able to go to university. Relax, your own pregnancy photo shoot does not have to be perfect, and neither does it have to entail taking a second mortgage on your house.
Do what you usually do when you are looking for a product or a service – shop around. Use the tools at your disposal – word of mouth and social media – it is going to be your pregnancy photo shoot after all. Not only should you decide beforehand how much you can afford to spend, but you should ask around and hear what people think about the photographers they had used for similar work.
Just looking at cute pictures is not enough. Talk to the photographer. If you are going to pose nude or semi-nude, it is important for you and the photographer to be comfortable with that situation. A pregnancy photo shoot should be fun and a relaxing experience. You don’t want to look unhappy, or angry on your own photographs, do you? Just imagine what your child will think years later when they spot the discomfort on your face, while a better option is not so difficult to find. If you are unsure, take a friend with you, or better, take two friends.
The true professional will do his or her best to get you to relax. They might suggest a few casual shots to get things going. Maybe not even part of the final photographs, but only as a way for the mother, or the couple, to get used to the way the photographer works. Such a casual pregnancy photo shoot might also open your mind to a few new ideas that you would want to try. Talk to the photographer, explain your fears and concerns and they will do their best to make your experience a memorable one.
