Most people remember those old family albums where everyone was dressed in their Sunday best and looking like they didn’t want to be there. Fortunately, the more modern approach to the family photo shoot does not have to be a stuffy formal affair. You wouldn’t want to look at your family pictures ten years from now and wonder why the people bothered if they didn’t want to be there.
A family photo shoot can be a lot of fun. Of course, it can be formal too, but it doesn’t have to look like a photograph taken at a funeral. Everyone can dress the same, or in the same colour scheme. The children could be standing and the parents seated, instead of the more traditional way of parents seated on chairs and children at their feet.
Include the grandparents and the family pets, they are part of the family too, aren’t they? If the family enjoy a particular activity together, like a sport, why not dress in the shirt of your favourite teams? Add a ball, or a bat, or even shoes or a shirt if one of the family actively takes part in the sport.
Outdoor activities can be especially useful in planning a family photo shoot. Pull out the garden tools or plant a few seeds or seedlings together. The shoot does not have to be indoors. The photographer needs to be prepared for an outdoor shoot so make sure that he has the equipment for proper lighting if you want an outdoor shoot. Just because the sun is shining does not mean that the photographs will be perfectly exposed.
If you do want a formal family photograph with everyone dressed in their Sunday best, the least you could do is smile. You are a family after all, sharing good days and bad days. Capturing memories with a family photo shoot, should reflect the ties that bind you, not the issues that pull you apart.
Some people may not be comfortable in front of a camera, especially with a formal shoot, but a professional will capture the best shots for you.
