When capturing the first days of a newborn’s life you need to decide whether to have the newborn photography shoot done in a studio or whether to have it shot at home. Though having your shoot done in a studio may offer some benefits when it comes to lighting and backdrops, a shoot at home offers a number of benefits too. A good photograph is only possible when the subjects feel comfortable in their environment, in this case the newborn baby and the parents. Modelling does not come naturally for many people and when doing a family portrait shoot you want the photograph to look as natural as possible so making the child and parents as comfortable as possible is key.
Comfort
Both the child and the parents will more relaxed in their home environment making it easier for the photographer to capture a good photograph. When the mother is relaxed and feels comfortable in her environment the newborn baby will feel comfortable. Newborn babies spend a lot of their time sleeping, so you want the baby to be in an environment that does not over stimulate the baby and keep them awake when they should be asleep. When a baby is not feeling at ease they tend to become crabby which will in turn translate into stress for the parent and can ruin a newborn photography shoot. At home the parents also have easy access to the items that the baby needs such as blankets, clothing, feeding bottles and so forth.
Unique
When shooting at home you create a unique setting as opposed to shooting in a studio where you can get a more generic looking photograph. Some of the most precious moments spent with your child will be in your home and so capturing the environment in which your child has spent their first days will add to the positive memories you have. Even though the shoot happens at home it is still possible to change the setting to create a better photograph. Doing the newborn photography shoot at home does not limit your flexibility in backgrounds and lighting much, if at all.
Travel
When the shoot happens at home the parents do not need to commute which also cuts out the stress of transporting a newborn baby to the studio.
